There’s been a lot of talk recently about the importance of supply chains. Nowhere is this more true than in sawmilling where we depend on people working in the forest and in haulage to supply our raw materials. We’re especially proud of the fact that many of the businesses who supply us have worked with us for donkey’s years and are local. This image illustrates the point perfectly. It’s one of the Goodwins driving the forwarder bringing felled timber from Sadler’s Wood which is part of a local estate less than a mile from our mill. It’s Dan Davies stacking the logs onto the trailer and who will bring them to the mill. Dan’s dad and grandad provided similar services to us. These family business connections are vital to Ransfords and to our industry generally. It’s estimated that up to 40000 people work in businesses related to forestry and sawmilling – most of them in rural areas like ours where, if you’ll pardon the pun, jobs don’t grow on trees!
